- Not to be confused with Dragon Quest I + II.
Dragon Warrior I & II is a Game Boy Color title consisting of remakes of both Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior II. It was developed and published by Enix, and was released in 1999 in Japan and in 2000 in North America. Dragon Warrior I & II is based on the Japan-exclusive Super Famicom compilation, Dragon Quest I + II, which features 16-bit remakes of both games. The game is on a black Game Boy Color cartridge, allowing for backward compatibility with original Game Boy units and even having unique Super Game Boy borders.
In 2001, following the success of Dragon Warrior I & II, Enix released a Game Boy Color remake of Dragon Warrior III.
Differences from the original
Both games
This remake included many changes from the original NES versions of the games, including:
- New opening sequences and cutscenes.
- Erdrick's name was changed to Loto.
- More experience points and gold were rewarded for completing battles.
- Characters leveled up at a more balanced rate.
- Several bosses had their HP and rewards increased.
- The script was re-translated, and several names were altered to more closely resemble their Japanese names. However, some changes were done due to limited character space.
- The enhanced graphics and sound from the Super Famicom remakes were downgraded for the Game Boy Color.
- Seeds that increase statistics were added. They are hidden in treasure chests, pots and drawers.
- The addition of a Field Log, which allows players to create a quick save.
Dragon Warrior
- The game no longer has an Elizabethan English script.
- The Stairs command has been removed.
- Three of the town names were changed:
- Brecconary was renamed to the Castle Town of Tantegel
- Cantlin was renamed to Mercado
- Haukness was renamed to Domudora
- Besides Erdrick, three character names were changed:
- Dragonlord was changed to Dracolord
- King Lorik was changed to King Lars
- Princess Gwaelin was changed to Lora
- The spells Hurt and Hurtmore were renamed to Firebal and Firebane respectively
- Some shops were added, including a vault (first introduced in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation) in Tantegel and Mercado, and a wandering item salesman in Rimuldar.
- The Flame Sword is a usable item in battle, and it produces the same effect as Firebane, but does not charge any MP.
Dragon Warrior II
- Some locations were renamed:
- Midenhall was renamed to Lorasia
- Moonbrooke was renamed to Moonbrook
- Tower of the Moon was renamed to Lune Tower
- A previously unnamed tower was given the name, Lighthouse
- The Prince of Cannock can now equip the Loto Sword and the Light Sword
- If a character is about to attack a monster that gets defeated during the current turn, they automatically strike another enemy rather than none at all.
- Certain lock doors can open automatically if the characters have a key with them
