The Dragonlord, also named Dracolord (alternatively parsed DracoLord), is a major villain in the Dragon Quest franchise. He makes his debut in the first game, Dragon Quest, as the main antagonist and final boss. Dragonlord is a blue humanoid sorcerer who has the ability to transform himself into a giant purple dragon. Dragonlord is also a recurring character in the Dragon Quest Monsters series and a playable character in the Itadaki series.

Dragonlord has a descendant who appears in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, but Dragonlord does not appear himself.

History

Dragon Quest series

Dragon Quest

In Dragon Quest, Dragonlord had stolen the Sphere of Light so that his army of monsters can invade Alefgard. He then kidnapped Princess Gwaelin to prevent King Lorik from organizing a resistance. After doing this, Dragonlord returns to his home at Charlock Castle. The Hero is sent on a journey to save Alefgard and the princess.

Late into the Hero's adventure, when he arrives to retrieve the Sphere of Light, the Dragonlord offers half the world to him if he will join forces with the Dragonlord. If the hero agrees, the Dragonlord will ask again, just to clarify the hero's intent. In the original Nintendo Entertainment System version, if the hero accepts the Dragonlord's offer a second time, the game ends as the menu colors go from white to red. In remakes, he wakes up back at Tantegel Castle. If the hero refuses the offer, the final battle begins.

Captain N: The Game Master

In Captain N: The Game Master, Dragonlord appears as a villain in a few episodes. He is only shown in his dragon form which, unlike in other appearances, is red instead of purple. Besides some Slimes and an Axe Knight, Dragonlord is the only character from the Dragon Quest series to appear in the television show.

Itadaki series

Itadaki Street DS

In Itadaki Street DS, Dragonlord is one of the eleven playable Dragon Quest characters. There are three collectible items relating to Dragonlord: Dragonlord Hat, Dragonlord's Robe and Dragonlord Staff, which can be equipped on customizable characters.

Fortune Street

In Fortune Street, Dragonlord is an unlockable playable character. He is the third character to be unlocked, and can be unlocked by placing first or second on the Alefgard board in Tour Mode. He still has a similar appearance as in the previous game, but the area around his robe is lighter in color, the jewel on his necklace has spikes, his hat resembles bat ears rather than horns, and most notably, he now has a visible nose.

Many of Dragonlord's quotes in Fortune Street are in "Early Modern English", a form of the language that was used by William Shakespeare and in Dragon Quest (except the Game Boy Color version).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, although Dragonlord does not appear, the final round of Hero's Classic Mode route references Dragonlord, involving Hero fighting a blue Robin (referencing Dragonlord's humanoid form) followed by a giant purple Charizard (referencing Dragonlord's dragon form). Further, the battle takes place in Dracula's Castle, which bears a passing resemblance to Dragonlord's Castle.
